Overview of Serpstat
Serpstat is a free, open-source web service for analyzing and visualizing SERPs. It was originally developed by as part of their work on the Google Webmaster Tools project. Since then it has been maintained by many other developers including who also created the related Serpstat Pro version.
What is Serpstat?
SerpStat is a free SEO tool that helps you to find out what keywords your competitors are ranking for. It also shows you how much traffic they’re getting from search engines and which pages of their site are bringing them the most visitors. This information can help you improve your own website’s rankings in search results.
Like other similar tools like SEMRush or Ahrefs, Serptastic lets you perform professional SEO tasks including URL and domain analysis, keyword ranking, SERP (search results) analysis, backlink analysis, competitor research, PPC (pay per click) research, organic keywords, site audits, and more. In addition to its existing features, SerpStat now includes several new ones like a custom report, database storms, and keyword clustering. The latter allows you to group keywords together based on their similarity. For example, if you want to know all the keywords that relate to “web hosting”, you could select the option to cluster those words into one category.

How Does SerpStat Work?
When you first launch SerpStat, you’ll be asked to sign up. You will need an account to use this tool. If you already have a Google Analytics account, you can log in through that. Otherwise, you can create a new account. Once logged in, you can start performing various tasks such as keyword research, competitor research, and site audit.
To begin keyword research, simply enter a domain name or URL in the text box at the top right corner of the page. Then, choose one of the options below:
Domain Name – Enter a domain name here and it will show you the list of subdomains, along with the total number of sites that use that particular subdomain.
URL – Type a URL here and it will show the list of subdomians, along with the total no. of sites that use that URL.
You can also add multiple URLs by separating them with commas.
Once you’ve entered the URL, you will get a list of subdomains that are associated with that URL. Clicking on any of these subdomains will take you to another page where you can find out about that specific subdomain.
Once you’re done entering the URL, you can either save it or discard it. To save it, just press Ctrl+S. To discard it, press Delete key.
If you wish to compare your website against your competitors’, then you should enter the URL of your competitor’s website. It will show you the list containing the URL of every subdomain that is associated with that competitor’s site.
If you don’t have access to the URL of your competitor, you can still do competitor research. Simply type in the URL of your competitor in the text field provided above. This will give you the same result.
The best way to know how well-optimized your website is, is to perform a site audit. For this, you must select the option “Audit” when you click on the “Tools” tab. Now, you will be presented with a screen like this:
This shows all the information regarding your website. On the left side, you will find a drop down menu where you can select the source of the data. There are four options available:
Google Webmaster Tools – The data comes directly from Google.
Open Site Explorer – Similar to what we discussed earlier, but the data is collected from Open Site Explorer.
Yandex Metrica – Data is collected from Yandex Metrica.
Bing Webmaster tools – Data is collected from Bing Webmaster tools.
Now, if you want to check the performance of a single URL, you can select that URL from the dropdown menu and hit the button “Check”. Alternatively, you can also select a range of URLs (from 1 to 10) and hit the button “check”.
After selecting the desired option, you will see a table showing all the details related to the selected URL. In addition to the basic information, there are two more tabs which provide additional insights into the performance of the URL. These are:
Crawl Stats – Shows the crawl stats for the URL.
Search Console – Shows the search console results for the URL.

To generate keyword suggestions, you need to first select the option “keywords” from the “tools” tab. After doing so, you will be presented a screen similar to this one:
In the top right corner, you will find a small icon. If you hover over it, you will see a pop up window saying “Add keywords”. You can add as many keywords as you want by clicking on the “+” sign.
You can also remove keywords by clicking on the “-“.
Once you are done adding/removing keywords, you can click on the “Generate Keyword Ideas” button. A new page will open displaying the suggested keywords.
You can filter out the suggested keywords based on their relevance using the dropdowns below the title bar.
Once you are happy with the keywords, you can click the “Save” button at the bottom of the page.
The sitemap feature allows you to create a sitemap for any given domain or subdomain. To do so, simply click on the “sitemaps” link under the “tools” tab and then click on the “Create Sitemap” button.
A new page will appear asking you to enter the name of the sitemap. Enter the name and click on the “create” button.
Now, you will be asked to specify the location of the sitemap file. Click on the “Browse” button and navigate to the directory where you wish to save the sitemap.
Click on the “save” button and you’re good to go!
If you want to analyze backlinks to your website, you can use the Backlink Checker. This is a free tool provided by Moz. It analyzes the backlinks pointing to your site and provides you with a detailed report.
If you don’t have access to Moz, you can still use the following method to get some insight about your backlinks:
1. Go to Google webmasters tools.
2. Select your website in the left pane.
3. On the main panel, click on the “Audits” tab.
4. Now, scroll down until you reach the “Links” section and click on it.
5. The next page shows a list of links pointing to your website.
6. Hover over each link and you will see a tooltip providing you with the number of times the link has been clicked.
7. Clicking on the link will take you to the actual page that contains the link.
8. From here, you can view the source code of the page containing the link.
9. You can also copy the entire HTML content of the page and paste it into Notepad++.
10. Using the Text-to-Speech function in Notepad++, you can listen to the text.
11. Finally, you can download the entire page using the Save As… option.
12. Once downloaded, you can extract all the URLs contained within the page using the URL Extractor plugin.
13. Now, you should have a list of all the pages linking to your website.
14. Repeat steps 6 through 13 for every other website that you own.
15. Once you are done, export the data into an Excel spreadsheet.
